3 Keys to Balancing Your Home/Work Life When You Work From Home
“Live a life you love! Work from home! It’ll be great” they say. If you’re like most work from home moms that I know there are days when it is absolutely wonderful, but then there are also days when you really have to decide if the blog post or doing the dishes is most important!
This is the reality of a work at home mom.
There are 3 keys to balancing your home and work life when you work from home.
- Set office hours but know that they may have to be flexible. Setting the intention of your office hours, planning for when you’ll do “work” vs housework, cleaning, running kids to practice, making dinner…or whatever else is on the list is critical to staying on course and not giving into throwing your hands up in the air and giving up! If you have a sick kiddo any and all of your office plans very well could go out the window, and that’s ok! That’s the beauty of working at home.
- Give yourself a break. Working endlessly and not “coming up for air” is very tempting. Especially when you’re working on a project that you love! You can totally get wrapped up in the excitement of it and forget altogether that your hubby doesn’t have clean socks! Most workplaces require a couple of 15 min breaks and at least half an hour lunch. Be sure to remember that you’re human and have a life outside of being an entrepreneur. Take breaks as necessary (even if it is 15 minutes to start a load of laundry).
- Know when it’s time to “Close up shop” for the day. We can get in the trap of thinking this has to be done now, and since we work from home there is no maintenance man or manager kicking us out of the office so he can lock the doors for the day. Be sure to set limits on working so that you can still enjoy your family and home life.
Balance in anything is always key and being a “mompreneur” takes a lot of intentional planning and decisions to create and keep that balance. Also, sometimes, balance means knowing that you’ll be totally absorbed into a project for a few weeks and asking the hubby for extra help to make it happen, and then after the project is complete spending some extra quality time with the fam to make it up!
